2006-07-25 [Magdalena Snow]: the population of Anchorage is around 300,000 people. it's little more than half the population of the entire state of Alaska. The city itself is almost all in that photo, which I took while climbing another mountain! we have lots of mountains up here. And if you want to know more about Mount Susitna, there's actually a Native Alaskan folk tale about it. I can't really tell it, but I'm sure you can find the story online somewhere... ^_^

There's a castle in Durham which some of the students (of that college) live in - but it isn't all that glamorous, because the rooms have been divded up and so they're tiny. As well as the fact that most people who apply to castle college don't get to live in it anyway since there's too many of em X)

2006-07-26 [shotokan_gal]: Erm... *searches through papers* Fees at undergraduate are (or were) around over $1000 per year in England. But with top-up fees (which I'm not sure if it effects all universities) it'll be more like £3000 per year - which is standard postgrad fees (since none gets payed by the local education authority people). Accomodation fees vary on the place.

2006-07-26 [shotokan_gal]: They're the new tuition fees, replacing the old system, and they're definitely being brought in in Durham since its been made a big deal of here (though doesn't affect current students), and other places, though don't know how many. In a big way they're supposed to bring more money into academia, and the underpaid lecturers (which the strikes for most of this year centred around >> ). But the idea is you don't have to pay them till after you leave and are earning over a certain amount, same as with paying off a student loan.

2006-07-26 [shotokan_gal]: Hmm well, most people are opposed to it since it effectively triples what a 3-year undergrad student would have to pay in fees. And that's before living costs, accom, food etc. There's no doubt help available for those in 'reduced circumstances' as they put it - at the moment some people have their whole tuition payed by their lea, or part of it. That might reduce if they didn't need to pay it till afterwards? And after a degree nearly everyone has a student loan of £3000+/year to pay off too, so overall it's seen as a negative thing putting students into even more debt (I believe the motion only passed in the commons by one vote).
2006-07-26 [shotokan_gal]: I can see the reasons for it too though, academics are shockingly underpaid (as long as they get the pay rises they've been promised). And if it goes back into the universities that's a good thing overall... though it won't be visible for some years. It might mean less people going to university, which I don't necessarily think is a bad thing. But another worry is the institutions involved will become more elitist and higher-class because of the potential costs. (though again, as you don't pay them till after, it maybe shouldn't have such a reason to as it might otherwise)

2006-07-26 [Charybdis]: meaning that they are overworked, which essentially comes out to the same thing. My father was on sabbatical last spring, but in the years before that it seemed like he had to spend more time at school than at home...
2006-07-26 [Charybdis]: And on another topic, I can see your point about it not being a bad thing if university enrolment went down somewhat. It's probably the same for you - over here people are worrying about a shortage of capable specialists in the trades, like plumbers or electricians. You're expected to go to university, and becoming a welder or whatever is seen as somehow, I don't know, not as respectable. As a result, we're getting loads of young lawyers and business(wo)men, but fewer people trained in the jobs that don't require years of higher education, like carpentry or something.
2006-07-26 [shotokan_gal]: Well, previous to this universities really make most of their money from postgrads / phds. And international students (which a lot of postgrads are, at least here). This puts things on level more, but even so, I only heard recently the university was in some debt and has been for some time o_O (maybe not in a big way compared to their full budget, it's hard to judge when you don't know all the figures). And it's not so uncommon either, but not something you think about as a student (when you've got enough money worries to be worrying about!). :( I can imagine that, the academics I know and know of seem to work long / extra hours, and that's the norm rather than the exception in their line :/
2006-07-26 [shotokan_gal]: Partly that, though there has been initiatives recently to offer those sort of vocational subjects in school for those really not interested in further education, and to give them more of a chance. But also, it's the governments obsession to get as many people as possible into university, whether the individual really should or not. Hence the value of a degree goes down, and there are some unis (which everyone knows about) which aren't serious enough that they should honestly stay open at all - except for the fact there's people to go in them. So in a lot of ways *where* you studied can make a big difference too.
2006-07-26 [Charybdis]: Exactly - a bachelor's degree isn't enough anymore, as often as not. With such a large pool of grads floating around looking for jobs, people can afford to pick and choose, and will tend to dismiss anyone with anything less than a Master's. And the government... I'm unwilling to generalise, since I respect what they do, but sometimes I wonder how real things are to them. A high percentage of university grads looks good on paper, but it's not always the best way to go.

I'm not a fan of people who blindly bash the government for everything either (watch me look like a hypocrite now X) ) - but targets, yeah. Not always a good idea. It's the same thing in schools, they want everyone to be getting more gcses and a-levels, and then when more do the exams are accused of getting easier. A lose-lose situation really.

2006-07-26 [shotokan_gal]: Didn't watch the whole series, but several of the straight-A students were dissapointed by their drops in grades (though the good ones still passed, not as highly as they did in their real exams). It may have been done in the summer after their gcses, though can't remember.

Some of the questions on the email forward I mentioned were on subjects that are still briefly discussed today, but not in anywhere near as much detail. Points of grammar that you may hear the name of but not really know much about, history questions far more specific than "who was the first prime minister?", geography questions dealing with something other than the water cycle or the cardinal points... *shakes head* It makes you wonder how much we really know.
2006-07-26 [shotokan_gal]: It does. Though at the same time where education's left some areas behind, it's moved on in others. I don't think people (well, kids) make such an effort to learn things on their own anymore though, maybe (*gasp*) out of school time. Certainly the jump from school to university I found absolutely huge. In terms of how much more you had to learn, take in, and know. A lot more intensive. Puts how little you learnt at school into some perspective too.
2006-07-26 [Charybdis]: True enough. School is now pretty much taken for granted, which it wasn't back then when it wasn't a given at all. Since people know they'll be learning stuff whether they want to or not, why bother doing it on their own time? If it were a privilege to attend school, or if it were like those places in poorer countries where education is truly valued, I think people who seek out knowledge on their own more often. ^^
2006-07-27 [iippo]: It's psychological, isn't it. Kids are told "you have to go to school" so obviously their reaction is "I don't wanna, it's stupid!" And if you went "you don't get to go to school, you should do something else", then the kid would want to go to school. (I used to be like that. My brother went to school two years before I did, I couldn't understand why I wasn't allowed to go too - I always went where ever he did. So when I was finally allowed to go to school, I really wanted to, too.)

2006-07-28 [Charybdis]: Whee :p They come to Canada once every couple of years. We met them when they came to our church, years ago ^^ We even spent Christmas with them when I was five, since my dad took a sabbatical and we all went to France ^__^ That was before they were in Bremen though. I think they lived somewhere around Cologne? In any case, we still correspond, and when my parents went to Germany a month or so ago they spent a good part of that time in Bremen with them ^^ I've seen loads of pictures. It's a lovely place ^^
2006-07-29 [Ocean Soul]: Never been to Bremen actually, but I think it really is a nice place. Many cities are uite nice, and Bremen is not one of these extremely modern and boring ones ;)

2006-07-29 [Charybdis]: Well, kind of x) It has a low sloping thatched roof, and one of those doors with the top half missing that looks hobbity even if it's not round. It's not actually in a hill, but it looks like it should be :P

2006-07-29 [Charybdis]: Even the rooms inside are laid out in a hobbity pattern - an old barn was actually transplanted from somewhere else and put around the original house, and the space created between the two walls has turned into a set of rooms that come off the main corridor x)
